Meet Special K

Who the heck is Special K? He is a new contributor to LasVegasVegas.com.

I imagine that my nickname will get me in trouble with the Kellogg's folks, but that is just how I roll, brave until confronted and then I run like crazy. One lawyer letter and I'll be Oatmeal McGrits.

Hi, I'm Special K. I'm an amateur poker player. I'm an amateur photographer. I shoot a pretty mean game of pool sometimes. Other times it looks like I rode a short bus to the pool hall (thus the nickname). Mostly, I'm a friend to Flipchip and the Poker Prof and they have been good friends to me.

I met Flipchip and the Poker Prof several years ago at the Bellagio. It was during the Fiesta al Lago Poker Tournament and the meeting involved an actor who plays Spiderman (that I won't name here), a final table, and some conversation with casino security. Sorry, but if I'm too specific, I can't tell the whole story later in a full post. A year later I was working for the guys at the same tournament as a photographer. I got to work with Dr. Pauly covering the action in a real WPT event. It was the time of my life. Since then, the guys have been good enough to post my occasional writings and photos.

Fast forward to today. I'm still working a day job out of North Carolina and still visiting Las Vegas every chance I get. Because I travel a lot in my job, my visits can come quite often. The things that I see and do in Vegas are much the same as many visitors, but different from the locals and with a much different perspective. I think that will be my niche here at LasVegasVegas.com. I'll try to tell the visitor's story, the changes that we notice and the important stuff, like Bette Midler sightings. But be prepared, the view from where I stand is usually a bit quirky. If it's too quirky or worse, well, that's what comments are for. You can set me straight anytime.

You won't be seeing reviews of the best places to stay or the ritziest clubs in Vegas. No. I can also be pretty low rent. You will be more likely to see a review of the Hooters Poker Room or encounters with angry celebrities. Over the next few weeks, I'll reach back in my memory for some of the highlights from my Vegas adventures. You may even recognize one or two in your own travels.

Thanks guys, for giving me a shot.

I'll finish with a picture from my last Vegas visit in February. This is a shot of the front of the new City Center complex. It is set between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo. I can't wait to compare this shot to the finished product.
